AI SI Daily Editors
This is an overview compiled from the official website, documentation and GitHub README. We have not tested it ourselves. Features and pricing are subject to the official pages; sources are listed at the end.

What it is

Cline is an open-source autonomous coding agent designed to assist software developers directly across their everyday working environments, including integrated development environments (IDEs), command-line terminals, and desktop operating systems. Rather than operating merely as an inline snippet generator or autocompletion tool, an AI agent is an autonomous program that can understand high-level software goals, explore directory structures, plan multi-step implementations, make coordinated file edits, and run terminal tasks to resolve development issues.

The project is packaged across several formats to suit different engineering workflows:

  • Visual Studio Code Extension: An extension available from the Visual Studio Marketplace that integrates the assistant directly into the editor.
  • JetBrains Plugin: A plugin tailored for the JetBrains product family, including IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, and GoLand.
  • Command-Line Interface (CLI): A terminal tool that supports both interactive conversations and automated scripting.
  • Desktop Application: A standalone native app for macOS, Windows, and Linux that runs outside of any code editor.
  • Software Development Kit (SDK): A Node.js library allowing developers to embed the underlying agent engine, register custom tools, and construct multi-agent systems.

According to the project README on GitHub, Cline is distributed under the open-source Apache 2.0 license by Cline Bot Inc. In addition, according to the official website, the project has recorded over 11 million installs across supported platforms, more than 70,400 GitHub stars, and contributions from over 250 contributors. The runtime is built without vendor lock-in, enabling developers to connect their choice of proprietary or open-source artificial intelligence models.

What it can do

Cline provides a broad set of capabilities spanning repository exploration, multi-file code editing, shell execution, and custom automation.

Multi-File Code Editing and Error Correction

Cline examines project structures, maps the relationships between files, and makes synchronized updates across an entire codebase. While editing, the agent actively monitors output from linters (tools that inspect source code for stylistic issues, formatting errors, and suspicious patterns) and compilers (programs that convert human-readable source code into machine instructions and verify type compatibility). It automatically detects and resolves problems such as missing imports, syntax errors, and type mismatches before changes are finalized. Inside editor environments such as VS Code and JetBrains, modifications appear as visual diffs—side-by-side comparison views showing additions and removals—which developers can review, refine, or revert. Checkpoints track every edit step, allowing users to undo changes whenever needed.

Terminal Command Execution and Live Monitoring

The agent executes bash commands directly inside the terminal and observes the resulting output in real time. This allows Cline to install dependencies, run test suites, execute build scripts, deploy applications, and manage databases. For ongoing processes such as local development servers, Cline runs them in the background and continuously reads new terminal logs, enabling it to catch build warnings, server crashes, and runtime failures as they occur.

Plan and Act Modes

To keep developers in control of their codebases, Cline provides two distinct operational modes:

  • Plan Mode: In this mode, the agent explores repository files, asks clarifying questions to understand goals, and outlines an architectural strategy.
  • Act Mode: Once the developer agrees with the proposed approach, switching to Act mode directs the agent to implement the file edits and terminal commands.

In standard operation, human-in-the-loop approval is required for every file modification and command execution. For users who prefer unattended execution, an auto-approve toggle allows the agent to run autonomously.

Repository Rules and Modular Skills

Teams can guide the agent’s behavior by placing a .clinerules file in their repository root. This file establishes coding standards, architectural rules, testing requirements, and deployment conventions. The CLI, VS Code extension, and JetBrains plugin automatically detect and apply these instructions. In addition, skills allow the model to load specific rule sets on demand when corresponding tasks arise.

Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Plugins

Developers can expand Cline’s capabilities through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for connecting AI assistants to external systems. Using MCP servers, the agent can query databases, call application programming interfaces (APIs), administer cloud infrastructure, and interact with developer services. Users can manage these connections in the CLI using the cline mcp command. Additionally, the Node.js SDK allows programmers to create custom tools and register lifecycle hooks for logging, auditing, policy enforcement, or domain-specific logic.

Multi-Agent Teams

Cline allows multiple agents to collaborate on complex engineering tasks. A coordinator agent analyzes the overarching requirement, breaks it down into subtasks, and delegates work to specialist agents that operate with their own dedicated tools and context windows. The coordination state persists across sessions so teams can resume work later.

cline --team-name auth-sprint "Plan and implement user authentication with tests"

Scheduled Automations

Using cron expressions—a standard syntax for scheduling recurring computer jobs—developers can set up Cline to run background routines independently of an active terminal window. These routines can generate daily pull request summaries, perform weekly dependency audits, or produce codebase health reports. Schedules persist across computer restarts.

cline schedule create "PR summary" \
  --cron "0 9 * * MON-FRI" \
--prompt "List all open PRs and their review status" \
  --workspace /path/to/repo

Messaging Platform Integrations

Cline connects with team communication platforms, including Telegram, Slack, Discord, Google Chat, WhatsApp, and Linear. Each conversational thread corresponds to an individual agent session retaining full context. Access controls can be configured to manage which team members can interact with the agent.

# Connect to Telegram
cline connect telegram -k $BOT_TOKEN
# Connect to Slack through webhook
cline connect slack --bot-token $SLACK_TOKEN --signing-secret $SECRET --base-url $URL
# Connect to Slack using socket mode
cline connect slack --bot-token $SLACK_TOKEN --app-token $SLACK_APP_TOKEN

Headless CLI for CI/CD Pipelines

For automated scripts and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, Cline can operate in headless mode without user interaction. Users can pipe terminal input directly into the agent, receive structured JSON event streams, and chain commands together.

cline "Run tests and fix any failures"
git diff origin/main | cline "Review these changes for issues"
cline --json "List all TODO comments" | jq -r 'select(.type == "agent_event" and .event.text) | .event.text'

How to get started

Getting started with Cline involves selecting the interface that best fits your environment, followed by connecting an AI model provider:

  1. Install the CLI: Developers who prefer the terminal can install the command-line interface globally using npm:
npm i -g cline

This utility enables interactive shell sessions, headless pipeline runs, and recurring scheduled routines.

  1. Install Editor Extensions:

    • Visual Studio Code: Search for and install the Cline extension in the Visual Studio Marketplace (under publisher Saoud Rizwan).
    • JetBrains IDEs: Install the Cline plugin from the JetBrains Marketplace within IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, or other JetBrains IDEs.
  2. Install the Desktop Application: Users who want a standalone interface without opening a code editor can download the native application for macOS, Windows, or Linux. The desktop app provides session management across local folders, scheduled routines, and MCP configuration.

  3. Install the SDK: Engineers building programmatic agent workflows, custom extensions, or multi-agent systems can install the official SDK package:

npm install @cline/sdk
  1. Configure an AI Provider: Because Cline is model-agnostic, users configure their preferred model endpoint or API key. Supported providers include:
    • Anthropic: Claude Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models.
    • OpenAI: Models from the GPT series.
    • Google: Gemini series models.
    • Gateways: OpenRouter (providing access to over 200 models) and Vercel AI Gateway.
    • Cloud Services: AWS Bedrock, Microsoft Azure, and GCP Vertex.
    • Fast Inference: Cerebras and Groq.
    • Local Inference: Ollama and LM Studio for running models locally on your own machine.
    • OpenAI-Compatible Endpoints: Any self-hosted or third-party service supporting standard OpenAI API formats.

Pricing and requirements

Pricing and Licensing

Cline is published under the open-source Apache 2.0 license, as stated in the project’s repository. Specific commercial plans, services, and pricing details are subject to change. For up-to-date information regarding official plans and offerings, refer directly to the official Cline website.

Requirements

  • Development Platforms: The command-line tool and SDK require a Node.js runtime environment. The editor extensions require a working installation of Visual Studio Code or a supported JetBrains environment such as IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, or GoLand.
  • Operating Systems: The desktop application runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
  • Model Credentials and Compute: Because Cline uses a bring-your-own-key or bring-your-own-weights approach, using the agent requires either an active account and API credentials with an AI provider (such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, AWS Bedrock, Azure, or OpenRouter) or sufficient local computer hardware to run models via Ollama or LM Studio.

Who it is for

Cline is suited for several types of developers and technical teams:

  • Software Engineers: Developers who manage multi-file projects and need an assistant that understands repository structure, makes coordinated edits, and fixes compiler and linter errors automatically.
  • DevOps and Terminal Users: Engineers who work extensively in shell environments or manage CI/CD pipelines, benefiting from headless automation, automated test fixes, and cron-based maintenance jobs.
  • Engineering Teams: Organizations looking to maintain codebase consistency across developers by establishing repository conventions and architecture rules via .clinerules.
  • Teams Prioritizing Flexibility: Developers who want to avoid vendor lock-in by maintaining the freedom to switch between cloud models such as Claude, GPT, and Gemini or run offline models locally on their own hardware.
